In the 13th century, the concept arose that the universe is a complex machinery of harmony, proportion and symmetry created by the master mathematician, architect and craftsman – the supreme being – built on universal laws and principles.
In Freemasonry, the square and the compass are depicted with the letter `G’ in the centre symbolising God or Geometer as the Great Architect of the Universe. But the basis of God’s immense architecture, was in simple arithmetic – the magical numbers zero to nine. These humble numbers are the basis of all other numbers and complex mathematics, without which humanity would not have been able to achieve the progress it has made today
Those dabbling with esotericism have allegorised these simple numbers and given them meaning. It gave rise to the science of Numerology, that has existed for thousands of years, but in more recent recorded history has manifested in knowledge such as the Hebrew Kaballah. The Old Testament, itself, is replete with numbers. Pythagoras, who lived around 2700 years earlier, may be accredited with the evolution of the modern-day science of Numerology.
In numerology, the number 1 has been characterised by individuation, independence and attainment; the number 2 by cooperation and partnership; the number 3 by expression and joie de vivre; the number 4 by regime and hard work; the number 5 by change and opportunity; the number 6 by balance, love and sacrifice; the number 7 by introversion and spirituality; the number 8 by justice, discipline and materialism; and the number 9 by completion, humanitarianism and philanthropy.
However, there’s more to the numbers zero to nine…The evolution of God and his cosmology and his creation’s endeavour, on both the spiritual and material plane, may be charted in these simple numbers, because the significance they entail is humongous.
Zero is the nothingness, the initial state. The void that the supreme being was, before he came to self-realisation. Zero is also the point of singularity that permeates everything since creation. For space and time are contained in a circle. The initial state was the void from which the knowledge of primal self manifested, and transited into the number one, the all-encompassing, all-knowing, all-awareness and all-consciousness of the supreme being. The numbers zero and one are definitive of the very essence of the supreme being, because he is the nothing and everything that encompasses all existence.
The fact is that zero multiplied by any number reduces the number to zero – the supreme being’s humble reminder to himself that he can be anything and yet be nothing. It may be incomprehensible to us, but the fact is that we, as material beings, cannot comprehend God.
All other numbers are multiples of one. The fact that the supreme being is immanent in everything.
The numbers zero and one contain all form and ideas. It must have taken the supreme being an inordinately long time to transit from zero to one, an eternity in itself, to become both nothing and everything.
The number two is the partnership that the supreme being contracted with the spiritual realm he created. It signifies the creation of the nine forms of spiritual beings that emanated from the supreme being. One can name them as the seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominations, virtues, powers, principalities, archangels and angels – the nine choirs of heaven.
The supreme being gave his new creation the gift of the freedom of will. But he imagined the will he entrusted them with, would be sublime and humble – just as himself.
The number three is the expression of dissent. The third step in the evolution of cosmology, was when some spiritual forms transmuted the God-given gift of will, to ego, and rebelled against the supreme being. The static nature of creation was then disturbed and engendered flux. Those angels that rebelled were unhappy with the status quo, and with God’s hierarchy, and felt they had to supersede the supreme being, himself.
Number four, the number that represents matter and form, symbolises the supreme being’s creation of the material universe. It became imperative that the dissent was transmigrated into a material universe… for lost creation to go through the process of alchemical cleansing, and purify, and qualify to become one with the universal being again.
The number five, a symbol of flux and action, represents the dualism in creation. The war of the worlds. The conflict between good and evil. The reason for there being challenges of morality and conscience in the material and spiritual world. It is a testing time for good souls, to act with peerlessness despite the odds; and an examination in iniquity for the intractable.
The number six is the balance that God creates in the world through the deus ex machina that counters evil from permeating the material and spiritual universe. It also represents the supreme being’s love for all his creation, including those fallen from grace. As also, the sacrifice of the supreme being’s temporarily relinquishing that part of his creation that dissented, when it was not without his capacity to destroy it altogether.
The number seven, stands for exertion of the conscience, and introspection. The supreme being constantly reminds his creation through his work, that they can make it up to him by good acts, and by submitting ego to his grand plan. It is the opportunity for his creation to contemplate and rediscover his goodness and love.
The number eight represents judgement and justice. All created life is a wheel of retribution and reward. The supreme being exerts his judgement and justice repeatedly, to manifest his grand plan. Justice is not an immediate undertaking. It may take a lifetime or several lifetimes or an eternity to materialise. God gives his dissenters a long line. It is for them to perceive that God is love and justice, and to attempt to make their way back into his fold.
The number nine symbolises culmination. The acceptance of the supreme being’s judgement by his creation. The expression of willingness by the fallen to retract and submit to the supreme being’s grandiose plan. It signifies the readiness to make a new beginning. For God is without the lengthy scale of time, it is the fallen who are caught in linear time and cannot imagine what is beyond it. For the supreme being time is circular, the beginning and the end are innate in him. The unity of his creation is with him throughout the dissent, because he is completeness, the full circle.
too good Monte . Can’t get enough of this . but if this related to numerology then what about numbers of 11 and 22 as these numbers are not meant to be added to a single digit
