Prayer to the divine supreme: A poem

What do we aspire for from the divine supreme?

That in our hapless tribulations it obviously seems

We wish for the alleviation of all our sufferings

Or do we desire the benevolence of wealth to ring in?

How often do we ask to obtain what is undeservedly more?

That this is the basis of what our hearts wish to the core

We haunt temples and churches in the hope of pointless blessings

When only within us can we find the equanimity of not wanting

In our selfish thoughts we seldom remember our lesser siblings

When we are preoccupied with the hunt to quench our desiring

How often do we pray for mitigation of woes of our brothers?

For those who go without food, clothing, healthcare or shelter

Evil is not only in sin and crime; but also in not sincerely caring

Cruelty is in the silence of ignoring, in generosity withholding

That our prayers are only worthy when we seek altruism’s province

And we beseech of the divine supreme to manifest ultimate equivalence
