To a darling pet: A poem

There is a time for the instinct of love

and the insight of loyalty

All broken down in a simple walk in the park

The bowl of enormity that you dive into

is food for our souls

A frolic of childhood all but forgotten

but remembered in your eyes

Pictures become postcards of time

We can’t see it, but we can figure out the smile

in the clouds, the skies, and in the miles

In the multitudes of questions on fate

And in your shining invisible animal faith

We have divinity speaking in your barks

An accordion and an orchestra of angels’ harps

That we can find love in brethren

But there are thorns in the roses, then

to fall back on unconditional consolation

that begins with you and ends with you

in your dependence and in ours

In the joy of untamed hours

Even as you go frailly into the circles of eternity

you leave the squares of the jigsaw of absence behind

For us to piece together, humbly

in your cherished memories
