Snow White’s witch stepmother would hardly have pinched the poison apple, if she hadn’t been ticked off by the crackle of her mirror. In today’s world, all she would need to do would be to visit the neighbourhood plastic surgeon to make Snow White go crimson. Beauty, it now can be said, is in the face of the deceiver.
One of the pioneers of surgical beauty, was Madame St Orlan, a French multimedia performing artist, who in the early nineties took the look out of the mythological book. She underwent 15 surgeries to incorporate features of various mythological characters in her visage. She called her art of draping the canvas – Carnal Art.
But today, it is completely done by everyone who wants to enhance natural beauty to artificial. It can be said: “Age knows no barriers, except for the surgeon’s stitch.” Ask the forerunners of the trade. The likes of Liz Taylor, Joan Collins and Cher. They literally fostered the cliche: “Looks can be deceptive.” But Hollywood comedian Whoopi Goldberg had all the fun in the pun when she announced one awards evening: “The Best New Face Award goes to… Michael Jackson” Whoops!
Cynics, however, will fancy a load of this dirt: About the lady who lifted her face so much, that now she needs an elevator to get up there.
