Beggars: A poem

Does life teach us the meaning of what is worth

When integrity and morality are hopelessly in dearth

It is time to question our stereotyped values

About what enervates us and what sinews

We need to introspect on why evil reigns

Why there are triumphant sinners and defeated saints

How easy it is for the one who nonchalantly deigns

And seeks our favours, while of goodness feigns

Lest it be that our judgement is an abject failure

When the reality manifests the price of allure

That we who innocently dream, have to pay

For treading the misled path in hope of a brighter day

Remember the one of you, on the street, who begs

Is only humbly seeking for his daily breads

The real beggar is the one who shamelessly wangles

And deceives the world in his avaricious tangles

Hi, I am Monte Cyril Rodrigues and live in Melbourne, Australia. I am a retired journalist. I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia. I've had voices and visions all my life. I think it is a spiritual experience, my doctors think otherwise. I am a deeply spiritual person and keep having experiences with otherworldly realms.
