Karma and free will: A poem

Among the many illusions that we inadvertently entertain

Is the one that incessantly revisits us time and again

That we are endowed with a bounty of free will

Not knowing it is constraints that our aspirations still

While men believe they can do whatever they want

It is the hand of God that indeed always haunts

That we are born with free will, but limitations reserve

In the predicaments that culminate what we deserve

It is the cycle of birth and rebirth that engenders circumstance

For God leaves nothing at all to random and chance

Our personal will can only take us where we are meant to go

Life only begets for us what destiny has for us in store

Ultimately, it is the will of God that prevails

No matter how much ego and ambition of us hail

Our actions, deeds, misdeeds and choices only entail

What fortunes and debts our next lifetime can avail
