Greed: A poem

What indeed sets the human race apart

What haunts it, what is truest to its heart

Dreams and aspirations guide it to much progress

But a surfeit of these is only a decadent regress

Because when greed sets in, injustice reigns

The snare of lust is what causes man to deign

Coveting what is not to have only causes strife

Ambition coupled with greed makes misery rife

For increments must not be pursued for selfish gain

Then everyone is besieged by overwhelming pain

The pursuit of more can take you on a material pace

Not knowing that such greed is only a vacant space

For acquisitions are only worth the short life’s run

You can’t take them with you once death beckons

Altruism not greed should be what stokes the fire

This is the one gift that humanity should truly aspire

On a personal level, one should be verily grateful

For the little one has, and not let avarice rule

For sheer riches lie in the inheritance of spiritual purity

That is the silent but loud calling of God’s blissful eternity
