Sacrifice stands tall: A poem

Those who do nothing but care for their own wants

Live their entire life solely in selfishness’ haunts

That in seeking and finding desires one only makes manifest

The illusions of life not the truth, and put the soul to rest

That in these pursuits we want our failures to gain to be brief

Not knowing that thus we bring our souls to greater grief

For good is in accepting that one needs not what one cannot have

To turn out greed with dignity, and be not the material’s slave

There’s bliss in the equanimity of dispossessing and dispassion

In letting go rather than in purposeless and relentless amassing

Those that bravely carry their crosses rather than seek self-gain

Are, in fact, assuring themselves of freedom from eternal pain

To live in love, but to stand for justice and fairness above all

To this end, to make one’s sacrifices, lest the soul fall

to avarice, greed and lust; because how easy it is to crawl

In such hapless choices, when the hardest path is evil to stall

Be it that we will to be like a mother to her brood

That in this resemblance, we partake in what’s good

For material success is temporary, sacrifice is immortal

In God’s eyes, those who live with this knowledge stand tall
