The mermaid’s wait, Part two: A poem

Her eyes are ocean’s pearls

The envy of expectant girls

Her heart has the lyric of fire

The verdant earth is her desire

She bears, involuntarily, the pain of gills

An air of freedom is what she wills

The prince’s kiss be her bait

A miracle of fate can never be late

The labyrinth of waves, perceives

A passion for feet, conceives

To morph the unenviable fish’s tail

Make a dragon from a whale

And then her spirit will know no bounds

of the heavens’ applause in rounds

To her dream be her fate consigned

The paradise of elements to find

For the dragon breathes fire

Flies in the air, and is sire

to the earth. All that is higher

This she wagers down to the wire
