When you deserve love, you ought to know it!: A poem

When you deserve love, you ought to know it;

no matter how old you feel from the decades fallen,

no matter how cold you feel in your bones

Even if you don’t think you’re worth a look because much of your teeth have fallen out!

If you discover that your lack of carnality (all through) was your virtue

when you chose and chanced upon life for the worth of sacrifice

And suddenly you discover that you are too old and worn out

to keep meeting the expectations of you from others

You even want to let your shed hair down

so that it finds root in your scalp again  in your long-deserved leisure,

If solitude was a leisure, that made you wholesome

in the brief remnants of life; and you think now is the time

you deserve love in all its Platonism, in all its vintage beauty!

The gestapo needs to be cordoned off; the antennae of radar

need to be taken down. And you believe you deserve to love yourself…

in words and poems and deeds befitting of you.

A candid light on you shines…from the souls of Mum, Dad, and all

those spirits that inscribed such valour and courage in you for such a long time!

And if fate cannot give you the love you deserved all long; BELIEVE IN LOVING YOURSELF

AND THE FEW PEOPLE WHO SURROUND YOU WHO ARE WORTH IT!
