When you smile through all the rain and pain…: A poem

The dim light seeps through the clouds

that are all over the place to remind you of

a failing convalescence, with the sky spitting rain

and your emotions are in trouble. I see the

evening snapping apart like a flower left to

wither in a neglected vaze, with its petals

slowly falling one by one, on a musty damp floor!

I am reminded of loneliness and how tiring it is after

all the courage shown, that even no soliloquy can save me and no song, yet.

All through life, the pied piper plays in the meadow

of seclusion, restraint and constraint; trying to cheer

himself up, as if he was the fool that didn’t try to avoid his

own tribulation, never attempted to escape it; with the wisdom

to fragilely cherish what could hardly  be his, before it be taken away!

Like this, like that! The stars keep calling over the sleepy horizon,

like orphans seeking out their parents in vain. And come to think of it,

this world has so many misdirected orphans with their miscued prerogatives!

Do the stars seem laid to waste by light or night, I can’t figure that out!

And one can be wistful in a garden where one has toiled and

tended; and the Universe was that garden that was stolen from one’s reach!

I had yellow fowers for a fortnight till yesterday, and blue flowers today

if they were like wallpaper clothing the walls of my soul, smiling and

not crying even in the eventuality of futility! My soul is never sore!

If I could believe happiness is just a flower purchased at a

market store! Is onus as easy as ownership? I was always

carrying the burden, and never had possession of anything! Never mind!

And when I am past sixty and reminded of lost causes, and

thinking that can I entertain any chance or probability now(?)

And that I only try and tried to cheerfully smile through all the lifelong rain and pain!
