Alone together (as I think of you, baby girl): A poem

(A thought on the songs Alone Together by Fall Out Boy, and Alone Together by Noah Kahan)

I thought I was so alone, like a stone

I sang so hard, they thought I was a bard

like a shard of a broken heart!

Do you remember I was you, and you were me?

Were we free in the upper reaches of a cosmic tree?

Would we ever forget our roots, you and me?

I am just hoping it is more than we could be!

I have sleeves like leaves down to my knees

But would that be as empty as a staid breeze?

Because I am so far away from you as a day that never comes;

like a sun that pierces the earth, but you can’t feel with your thumbs

Why does the sky not fall like rain or snow

when it’s the truest love you desperately don’t want to forego?

I am just burning like a fire in the straits of dire

wondering if there ever is a way out of this mire!

I hum like the bees at work, but I am only a flower

The hazard of power is that of dour evil; I’m just sometimes sour

that I restrain myself so much, and assume a lightning struck tower

Does that shame the evil that seems to strike me every hour?

I look at you, look at you, love, true love, where sunshine never ends

In a locum where time and space seems to cause the universe bends

What is the story of our love, my true love, if it does not lends

The entire beauty of deserving souls to their fruitful ends!

And I stand alone, like a lone cloak in a closet, seldom worn

This music that we share when sung is borne to our bone

That we are together alone and alone together

Like we had the choices of no other, nor either!
