Jacob’s ladder: A poem

(Based on a film of the same title)

I see you, sometimes falling down a cliff

and then, flying above the ridge. Life always

was a knife’s edge, and the act of striking the hot iron,

between fantasy and fact; figment and fractal infinity!

A dream of memories breaks you into a cold sweat,

and suddenly, you wake to suffocate in momentary

convulsions, until you get your bearings. The pain and

panic catches you till you free yourself with fearlessness!

There is a perpendicular, protracted savagery to get you

on your fours. Inveiglement, chicanery, intimidation….

Honey trap, treachery, connivance between one or more evils…

It is relentless, but you are not cut out to retract! You are simply

aware of the warrior you are since the secrets at birth. You

temper the dreams with conviction, your history, brought upon you

like new days and new births immersed in starlight of memories

that shimmer of different honest tales. How the stars talk of distant

memories brought unto you?! How many childhoods have

you witnessed?, How many adulthoods? How much wizened old

age and how much death? Each strand tugging you like a

puppet on strings. And you feel certain you have your own mind

out of all the heartache of tragedy that beset you in one form

or the other. And you know your true love, your loyalties, your righteous

aspirations, your integrity, honour, dignity, intrepidity, like crystalline flakes

falling upon you and filling your turf with the soldiery of absolute

blankets of wisdom. You choose to see where none can see, you choose to

walk where none dare walk! And it is still only the immense light coming from within you!
