Junipero Serra and all you murderous priests: A poem

Do you think it was legend to mark posterity

when you thought native blood was mere cheap

liquid, not even red as the Ameri-Indian skin

And your pale-face was a perfection in Christ

in your missionary zeal of Franciscan fraternalism;

by the spikes on your shirt to cut you, to bleed

you just like the self-flagellation that you undertook.

That you thought it was ethical to return your

own evil masochism to the masses with intense cruelty to them!

That you should think all your dogma must put

an end to native Pagan cults, that their ritualistic lives

in nature were far too wickedly inferior to your

chauvinistic truths, so that there was no blood

on your hands even in the reprehensible torture,

burning at the stake and conversion by the sword and gun!

And talk of the great good to the cause of Christendom

your murderous Dominican Inquisitions did to the Iberian

colonies – West and East. All your priests so hastily

beatified by the Church, like saints who knew no worth

in the native’s soul and blood, were he to be as good

as poisoned by the Crucifix for posterity, if he were to

disavow and disengage from his ancestral faith; so that

he be orphaned from his soulful forefathers for eternity;

and be blessed with the self-glorification (and his own

proclaimed inferiority) by the Church, until his soul was

saved by the Sword, not Word, of Christ!
